Question

Does Cricket lock my unlocked phone that wasnt purchased through Cricket?

Hi all,

My question is a two parter. First off, I will be purchasing a new iPhone outright through Apple store because my job gives me a discount. When I put my Cricket SIM card into my phone, will Cricket lock my unlocked phone? Second, if Cricket does lock the unlocked phone, can it be unlocked in a week or less if I decide to go to another carrier? I see that Cricket says you need to be a paid customer for 6 months with the device, but that only refers to phones purchased through cricket. If it can be unlocked in a week or less, how would I do that?

Bringing an unlocked phone to Cricket will not change the phone. I have an unlocked phone and it wasn't locked when service was activated.

Thanks for the response Retired1. I must say though that a year ago my friend gave me a brand new IPhone 7Plus (paid off) and I do remember getting a pop up message when putting in the SIM card that the phone will be locked, but at the time I didn’t care because I wasn’t expecting to leave cricket. I just want to make sure that this won’t happen to me now and if it does, I want to make sure that this will be unlocked for me and I won’t have to wait 6 months.

Thanks for the help

They don’t lock BYOD phones. They only lock phones that they supply at a “discount“ or “free” as they have to get their money back for that phone. They estimate 6 months to do so.
