Messages taking up too much space (130gigs)

I'm sentimental and prefer to keep my messages. However they're taking up half the space on my iPhone 12 Mini.

Up until recently, Messages were disabled on my iCloud (I'm not sure why). I was under the impression that if I enabled them, that they would be "offloaded" to iCloud and would free up space. I did this a week ago and watched it slowly sync over the next few days. However I'm still sitting at 130gig on the phone.

What are my options here? Assuming I want to keep a history of all my messages. Worth noting is I'm technically ok if they aren't on my phone and instead are on iCloud or some other easily-accessed backup.

Worth noting is I've already gone through and deleted large attachments (via the feature which lists attachments by size).

issue got solved!!
