Purchasing new phone without upgrading

I am currently a cricket customer with a plan and two phones under the plan. I am planning on getting my wife a new phone for christmas but did not want to upgrade her phone. I wanted to keep her phone and get a brand new phone so she would not know what she was getting. Am i able to just purchase the phone and activate it and wait until christmas so i can just switch out the sims cards once she gets it
