I know some people were asking about this in posts from the past week or so. I went in day one, because I've always done bring your own device and figured things would work fine and didn't really care if 5G did not work yet.

Initial thoughts: It's usable, but I think it might be a week or so before it's great.

I ended up spending about an hour with support today though and had to open two advanced tickets. I initially noticed I could not turn on Wifi calling, despite the updated website showing it should be available for iPhone 12 and Pro. After I mentioned the updated FAQ page, the rep agreed it seems like it should work but they were seeing that they couldn't enable it on my account. So I think I got in too early and they weren't ready yet. It worked fine on my previous iPhone X.

The other thing I ran into was that receiving SMS messages stopped working after a short amount of time. (It's not an iMessage problem, it happens with normal SMS contacts) I could send SMS messages fine and others could receive them but all incoming texts were not coming through. I got the rep to reset my SIM, which initially seemed to work and I got a flood of missed messages but after a few minutes new ones stopped coming in again.

5G is actually working fine for me and I'm getting faster data speeds at home than I did on my previous phone. I can only test regular 5G, I am not anywhere near mmWave if Cricket happens to support that. I was getting 80mbit download speeds where I used to get around 10-20 from my iPhone X, and I'm seeing the phone idle at 2 bars much of the time now whereas when I randomly checked my iPhone X it always used to be 1 bar. So reception might be better than the iPhone X was. (I had the model with the better Qualcomm modem)

In summary, I think they have some minor things to work out but voice and data work fine so I'm satisfied with the consequences of being an early adopter. The battery life on my 3 year old iPhone X was suffering, so it was time for me to upgrade anyway.

Edit 2020-10-25: See my two follow up posts. As of 2 days after launch, both of the problems I was having are now resolved.

Almost everything running smoothly for me. I am having the same issue with WiFi calling and not being able to activate it. One of my favorite features. Hoping it’s just some early issues that will be resolved in the next couple days.

In an update to my previous post, it looks like the SMS problem I was having is just local. I had to drive about 200 miles today to attend a wedding and when I got about 30 minutes from home I suddenly got a flood of the 14 text messages that I hadn't gotten for the past 15 hours. SMS is working fine now that I'm away from home, despite having a signal and everything else working fine.

I also got a voicemail notification, (so I guess those were not working either) which was a message from Cricket support saying they were trying to reach me about the ticket I placed for Wifi Calling not working. The voicemail message said since they could not get ahold of me they were closing the ticket. That's kind of rude, but I'm glad to see I wasn't the only person unable to turn on Wifi calling so hopefully enough people contact support that they get it dealt with.

The SMS problem could have existed on my old phone and I never noticed because I always had Wifi calling enabled. Who knows. Either way, it looks like the main problem I was having was specific to my area and I'm hopeful that if they get the ability to enable Wifi calling fixed then everything might be better.

It says that the iPhone 12 and 12 pro are available ONLINE and IN STORES but I have called my surrounding locations and they say they will not have either of the 2 in store until next month!!!????!!!

One hopefully final follow up to my previous two posts. When I got back home today from the traveling I did yesterday SMS was still working fine. And 4 hours later it is still working. Sunday evening I tried to enable Wifi calling again. That worked on the 2nd try and it is now enabled for me.

So at this point everything is working great for me with an iPhone 12 Pro on Cricket's network. I guess they just had to finish getting things ready over launch weekend. If anyone was waiting to make sure things were okay before upgrading, I think they're good now at least in my experience.

The new iPhone 12 series has a thinner design that also makes it lighter and smaller. This is despite the 5G antenna. Arun Mathias, Apple’s vice-president of wireless software, said the new 5G has been tested on over 100 carriers across the world, hitting up to 4 gigabits per second download speeds in ideal conditions.

The biggest thing I always expect in new iPhones are updates and improvements of cameras. For so many years, cameras in iPhones are among the best on the market and that's why I love them so much. Now the iPhone can replace a professional camera in many cases, and once even the camera had questionable quality. I recommend you click here to learn a lot of interesting information about photography, about many interesting photographers and their work. This resource contains many interesting essays and there you can get help in writing them, so I recommend you take a look!
