My son created a lock screen pattern on his phone and now can't remember the pattern, how can I get his phone open for him?

As far as I am aware the only way would be to reset the phone completely, if it provides you an option to do so. Information on the phone would be wiped, but I don’t think the carrier would have any access to help with this. What type of phone is it?
