Why does ending 3G support mean my 4G LTE phone won't work anymore?

Hi all! I have an unlocked OnePlus 5 with a Cricket SIM. It's not a new phone, but it works perfectly and is 4G LTE compatible. I got a text this morning from Cricket saying that 3G support will be ending in February 2022 (fine, cool) and that my device will no longer be supported (what?)

I tried calling Cricket to ask why I'd be getting a text that doesn't seem relevant, but the guy palmed me off talking about “changes to the network” without actually explaining why shutting down 3G means a 4G phone would no longer be compatible. He insisted it's because it's unlocked, but then said any iPhone from 6S onward, unlocked or on Cricket, would work fine. Clear as mud, right?

So I wanted to ask here if anyone can shed any light on what this actually means, or if it's a mistake on their end. If it isn't, I'll probably just switch network rather than pay for a new phone - Cricket isn't the only budget carrier anymore!

@jdor Thanks for the reply! It sounds like a scheme to get money out of older phone users to me, but I do appreciate the extra information. Have a good one!

Hi @jeimuzu22

To activate a device on the Cricket network or to continue having service after February 2022, you'll need an HD Voice-capable smartphone that is compatible with the Cricket HD Voice network. This includes HD Voice-capable devices from Cricket, and select BYOD (bring your own devices). Please, know that not all 4G LTE phones brought to Cricket will work on Cricket’s HD Voice network, unfortunately. For more information, and for list of BYOD compatible devices, you can check out the links provided:
