Always showing one voicemail waiting even if voice mailbox is empty

Hardware: ZTE Altair 2
OS: Brew MP version 1.0.4.470

Under Mainmenu > Messaging, the Voicemail line always shows one message waiting.  This is true even if there are no messages waiting.  If there is more than one message waiting, then the Voicemail line shows the correct number of messages waiting.  How can I arrange for the Voicemail line to show no messages waiting when the Voicemail mailbox is empty?
