"Call Forwarding: Connection problem or invalid MMI code."

For the last two years, every time i dial an MMI code for any call forwarding (https://www.geckobeach.com/cellular/secrets/gsmcodes.php), I get "XXX Forwarding: Connection problem of invalid MMI code". 

If I use the phone app's settings (https://www.androidauthority.com/call-forwarding-android-870778/), I get "Call settings error.  Network os SIM card error". 

I get similar results if I pop my SIM card into an iPhone X. 

This means that I cannot control my phone when traveling, I cannot redirect it to crick et visual voice mail or use any other visual voice mail, except to call customer service spend multiple hours watching them go through their inane menus, gratuitously talk down to me about how to turn on these features myself, before actually doing something, if I am not cut off along the way.

What are my options at this time?

I am told I have to plunk down some money to buy a new SIM.  If I am going to do that, I might as well switch providers.....

Were you ever able to solve this issue? I've been running into it for awhile now and haven't been able to fix it.

I ported my phone number from straight talk to cricket over 3 weeks ago.  The call forwarding isn't working.  I made over 11 calls and spoke to 6 supervisors.  At&T is blocking my call forwarding on their server.  Cricket has no access to it.  They just keep submitting trouble tickets to AT&T.  They also do not have a tech department.  They tried telling me that i had a bad sim card.  So I went to a cricket store and had my sim card replaced.  This issue has nothing to do with the sim card.  Call forwarding is a network side service.  You send MMI (Man Machine Instruction) Codes through the dialer to the network.  This is false advertisement.  I am suppose to have Call Forwarding.  They even tried telling me that it was a problem with my phone.  Once again, call forwarding has nothing to do with the phone or the sim card.  I tried 2 different cricket sim cards from friends in my phone.  Call forwarding worked on my phone with both of their cricket sim cards because AT&T isn't blocking their call forwarding.  Why does their call forwaring work and mine doesn't?  It is because they didn't port a phone number to cricket.  They started their service with a number from cricket.  It is the ports that cause this problem and they need to fix it.  I get the same errors that you do.  That is the network blocking your call forwarding and mine.
