Samsung Galaxy S8 Android Pie Update

Hello! I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ with the 9.1 Software while my son has a Galaxy S8 with the 7.0 Software. I would like to know how he could update his software to the one similar to mine.

His original carrier was AT&T until we switched over to Cricket.

The Model Number is SM-G950U.

Is it the exact download for the update?

I see it shows the android 9 update is available for the g950u but I can't update. Is there a specific reason for that?
